Project estimation...timewise

I'm about to start coding a, IMO, a very large web project.

The site is, for the purpose of explination, very similar to a find-a-date site. It includes the following:

1. a user login - users login to add or update information about themselves, and/or upload a picture

2. eCommerce - in order to get a listing(even a free one), users have to enter in there credit-card number which will be (hopefully) processed in-house

3. A categorized directory - basically, users get to choose which part of the directory their are listed in

4. Search - and this is most crucial, this is one thing that will set me apart from my competition, extremely relvent search results based on a number of user properties/info

   From the market research I've done, I've concluded that these features are part of the minimally-accepted-product for the market I'm targeting. In other words, this is the absolute minimum that I can offer, and have it still be accepted by the majority.

   Again, its not a dateing site, but it will be very similar as far as databse programming is concerned.

   I have about 5 years experience in c++, but I'm relatively new to php and postgreSQL.

   The question is, about how long do you think it would take to code somthing like this? 100 hours? 200? 1000? 😕

   I would just start, but I'm trying to gage whether or not I want to bring someone else one to help me out with the coding.

Hi,
it's impossible to say. IT depend on you.

The things you have to know, that isn't used in c++ are a lot.

First the session/cookie management.
To do this you need a DB, so you have to learn any db interaction, do some queries, etc...

May be 1 up to 7 days (8 hour per day...), but it's depending from you.

If you do a well work with db, to show the categorized directory and a navigator bar is a 1-2 days work, + time to put in all the info in db.

It's the same for the search: it's do a different query and all is done.

Now you have to crash into credit card, and because i'vent play with this, i cannot esteem how much time you need.

Ok, we can say 100 hours is a good time, but we have to add the time for put in all right info in db. And remember, all this depend on you.

But, for my experience a program is always done tomorrow... 😃

Thinking better, i have to add at least other 50 hours to do the layout of the pages...

Just doing the PHP n MySQL it would take about 30hrs working moderately if you were fairly confident with PHP n MySQL. Otherwise it depends on just how quickly you pick it up.
