Using .txt files to populate MySQL

I'm just starting to learn MySQL and I am following the tutorial given in the manual. The part where you use .txt files to populate the database.

My problem arises when I try and use the \N field in the txt file.

If I use the SELECT * FROM pet; command instead of NULL being in the death field I get 0000-00-00. Everything else goes in correct. Where am I going wrong ????? 😕

I left it and carried on with the tutorial and when you get to working the age of the dead pets I'm getting ridiculous ages.

HELP !!

i always use a 10 digit unix timestamp for dates, dont bother with any other, too hard.

0000-00-00 is the no date value for a mysql date field, just set your code up accordingly.

Ok that sounds right.

However I never set it up as 0000-00-00. The value in the txt file was supposed to be set to NULL via the \N.

I was expecting a NULL value instead of the 0000-00-00. In the MySQL manual tutorial this is what it shows and as far as I am aware I have done nothing different. Any ideas ??
