phpmyadmin

hello
a think appends when i try phpmyadmin

i install the soft

afters i configure config.inc.php
with localhost ,login ,pass the same with mysql

i start mysql withuser root
safe_mysqld --user=root &

mysql works and i get a an access in the terminal server

i configure phpmyadmin as virtualhost in apache
i get the page of phpmyadmin in my server
but the message is

#2002 - Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

i restart the machine

same message

just another think
the server , login, mdp are ok in the config inc php
i dont have mysql.sock in /var/lib/mysql
the server mysql is launched

Can you connect to mysql from any .php web page?

Try something simple like

$conn = mysql_connect() or die (mysql_error() );
echo 'Connection works';

and i get
when i launched the page
