Urgent: Firewalls and DMZ

If someone said that your server was a DMZ, what does that mean to you? To me it means that your firewall is not protecting your server and that in effect it might as well not be.

I would think they'd say my server was in a/the DMZ. And yeah, it typically means there is no external firewall protecting the box (the box would need its own firewall).

Demilitarized Zone

To me this simply means an area that I expect to have to fix because I expect it to get trashed. It may or may not reside outside of my firewall but it does reside outside of my IDS and other netowork monitoring tools.

In many SOHO environments, DMS means something like "Any inbound requests will be sent to the DMZ'ed machine" ... in that situation, likely some device is doing NAT for a LAN, but only outbound requests from the DMZ'ed host. It should run a firewall.

Heck, it should probably run one whether or not it's DMZ ....
