A timestamp is a count of the seconds that have elapsed since 1/1/1970 so it doesn't matter if the two timestamps are not in the same year. The only time you'll have a problem is if one of the tmestamps is from before 1/1/1970.

Yes, but [man]getdate/man is a number which is equivalent to the ordinal yearday (Dec 31 is 365, for example), therefore it is an issue if he uses my suggestion.
Tekky's solution is superior...you might wanna round $diff, though.
