stop mysql

How do you stop mysql from telnet? I have looked in the documentation @ mysql.org and cannot find this or I just don;t understand it,

All I could find is how to automate a start/stop from shell script, I would like to stop mysql from the comand line after I start my telnet(SSH) session

I am using RH 7.3
Mysql 4.0.14 standard
Loged in as root

No, I need to stop the MySQL engine from the telnet prompt

so you have telnetted into the machine and you want to stop the mysql engine from there?

Assuming it's an RPM install

service mysql stop

or maybe

service mysqld stop

I think it's the first.

I just do:

/etc/init.d/mysqld stop

or you could do:

kill pid

where pid is the process number of mysql's root process. There are probably other ways of stopping mysql: mysqladmin, safe_mysqld, don't install it ( ;P ), ...
