Persistent Connections

I am trying to figure out how persistent connections work. I was trying to pass a link identifier across pages to a mysql_query function but now realise that through use of a persistent connection I may not need to do so. I am wondering then how I would proceed? By defining a connection in an application as persistent, should any mysql_query functions automatically use the persistent connection even if they are not contained in the same script? I am having trouble doing so.... Is this correct or am I misunderstanding persistent connections?

generally speaking, you cannot pass a link identifier across pages reliably. I.e. you can't be gauranteed to get the same link, and often, the link has been "reset" so it looks clean and new.

If you want to pass session data across pages, just pass the row id of whatever row you were accessing on the previous page to the next.

persistant connects are a performance enhancer, but can cause MASSIVE problems on an improperly configured (for persistant connects) apache/php/database server.
