unserialize() and special characters

Are there any special characters that elements of an array cannot have if I want to serialize / unserialize them?

as an example, here's one element of one of the arrays I'm trying to serialize / unserialize:

<ra(1,0,K,100,0,36,75%)><t(42.718,0,"1 "108.738,0,"1 "165.325,0,"1 "231.345,0,"1 "292.5,0,"1 "366.712,0,"1 "428.293,0,"1 ")><z7> A B C D E F G

I was able to solve this problem by using a base64 encoding:

$giant_array_broken_down = serialize(base64encode($giant_array));

and to bring that back to the array form:

$array_rebuilt = base64decose(unserialize($gaint_array_broken_down));
