[Resolved] Splitting up parts of a variable

You guys may find no use for this and call me stupid, but I'd really like to figure this one out. Lets say I have this number in a variable: 20030908220000. Now what I want to do is split this up so that the first four numbers (2003) are taken out of this variable and put into a new one (e.g. $newvar1). Then I want the two numbers following (09) put into a second variable ($newvar2) and so on... You can probably guess I'm working with dates here. Anyways, thanks for your help!

eg $year = substr($dateStr, 0, 4);

in the example above, inside the ()
the variable with all the numbers in (20030908220000)
the first number (0) is where it starts (0 being the space before first, 1 being the space before the second)
the second number is where it finishes (4 the forth character in the string)
