preg_replace/str_replace me!

hiyo...

i'm trying to get some text entered into a textarea to nicely wrap itself up with tags...my code works nicely...

but...it won't stop...it repeats itself every time i save...

so i get What?!

$btext = preg_replace( "/[\n]+/", "\n", $btext );
$btext = "<p>" . str_replace( "\n", "</p><p>", $btext ) . "</p>";

it seems like a common problem...but i can't find a solution...

any idears?

Are you trying to make the user's text in the TEXTAREA look the same as they typed it in the browser? If you are, then it seems that maybe you are saving the into the database, which would be why it's doubling up every time.

What you should instead, is when you want to print the text to the browser, is use the nl2br() function. It automatically puts for every \n in the text.

<P>
<?php
echo nl2br($text);
?>
</P>

i surfed and tinkered for probably 3 hours on this subject...and tried pretty much everything i could find and invent...i even went so far as to download some source code for a forum and tinker with that code...

however, i know it's a solvable problem...but i was just trying to push myself to learn something new...

what i was trying to do though, was have it so that the inputter wouldn't need to type in the tags around paragraphs...just type away and hit return(s) as needed...

thanks for that tip...i'll get this working the way i need soon enough...

If its repeating every time you are saving, then the problem is that you shouldn't save the in the database...

Try just running that regular expression whenever you print the user's text outside of a TEXTAREA. That should give you the results you're expecting. You don't want to save the into the database, because then it will show up when they edit it.
