default umask

Hi,
I want to change the default umask on files uploaded by php.

The permissions on uploaded files should be 644 and not 600 as they are today.

I want to change the umask for the whole server, so that all scripts gets affected, not just one by using umask() in the script.

I´m running Linux slackware 9 with apache 1.3.28, php 4.3.3

Maybe I can change the umask in apache configurations or maybe by using ini_set in apache configurations?

I may be wrong on this, but I believe that Apache inherits the umask of the root user unless you are running suexec with a different umask compiled into the server.

If you own the box you might change your umask in the shell, restart Apache, and give it a shot.

If I'm right, the only alternative I can think of (it's early, and I'm not that great a thinker) would be to set PHP's umask in your header files (or an auto_prepend file---see php.ini).

I don´t understand what you mean with:

I own the box so I can do whatever i want.
But change the default umask in the shell (which I think is 022), do you think that helps?

I´m not running php in safe_mode and wonder why files uploaded by php gets 600 permissions?

I attempted to explain. I can find no setting for Apache's umask. Apache inherits the umask of the user who starts it --- (at least it does in my case)...the only thing that throws me in your case is that you say your umask is 22 but Apache writes at a more restrictive level....

I read about this after seeing your question this morning. After reading your reply, I tried this:

1. I set my umask to 22 in the shell (as root). I start Apache. I upload a file, and its permissions are 'rw-r--r--'.

2. I stopped Apache. I set my umask to 11 in the shell (as root). I start Apache. I upload a file, and its permissions are 'rw-rw-rw-'.

I can't tell you for certain that this will work for you, or that it's what you really want to do, but according to both my reading and my experimentation, it should work. Note that I stopped Apache, not a "graceful" or a "restart".

My default shell is tcsh, but I don't think it matters that much, as umask is a shell builtin....or, maybe it does. Below is output from umask in tcsh, sh, csh ...

22

0022
$ csh

To change your umask, simply add it as argument 1 to the umask command.

If you wish to change it more permanently, edit your .cshrc (csh/tcsh) or .profile (sh/bash) ... here's mine...

# A righteous umask
umask 22
