pdf to be secured by member only?

For example, I have some pdf files that I want to be accessed by members only.

For the members only php pages, I will check the sessionuserid and sessionpassword againist the a member table in my database.

But how do I do this on pdf documents? If there are several approaches, could you briefly show me all and point out which is the best?

store the files in a protected folder which only php can access, not the users by typing in the url

then on the page that shows the list of pdfs check for the session vars and bob's your uncle
