sending mail with php

i know that php has the mail function that allows u to send mail but from what i gather since it isnt working on my PC (that i use for developing) i need to download some sort of mail server software or something of the sort right? so what software is good for this - from a php developers point of view - and where could i find more articles / tutorials on setting up this software.

i am totally uneducated in the area of the mail function with php but i would really like to dinf out more about it, cause i am building a user login system and need to use this function in development but at the moment it isnt working.

any help would be greatly appreciated

If you are running on win32 then you should be able to send mail through your pc.

You need to have the following in your php.ini file:

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = localhost

hey there,

thanx for ur time and effort but for some reason it still refuses to send the mail.This is the code that i use to send the mail :

$email_address = "username@email.com";
$subject = "Your Membership at MyWebsite!";
$message = "Just checking to see if i can send automated mails";

mail($email_address, $subject, $message)

but the mail is not sent to the relevant address, i dont know why...

Why don't you try setting the SMTP server to whatever your email program is using?

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = smtp.myisp.com
