MySQL alter table problem

Could someone please tell me how to change the default value of a column?

So far I have a column called "item_image" and so far it has a value of "NULL". But, I want to change default value to "defaultpic.gif".

I can assure you I've tried the manual, but I keep getting MySQL errors whenever I type their suggestions in.

if you are using phpmyadmin, then type

update tablename set fieldname='default.pic.gif' where fieldname is null

for future entries, goto table structure > click the [color = blue]change[/color] link and in the default value type in "defaultpic.gif"

submit the change
