[Resolved] Categories... again

Hi,

I'm a newbie to PHP and MySQl so sorry if my question sounds dumb to ya all. 🙂

I've got a table like that:

I want to make a navigation bar where all items listed and sorted by category with pagining but prev/next links only appear for the current category so the output shoud be:

Cats 1 2 3 | Mice 1 2 3

Dogs prev 1 2 3 next
- if we're on any Dogs page.

I searched the forum, figured out it could be done with nested WHILE loops... maybe... and i also found a cool pagination script that works like a charm... but my poor exhausted brain can't put pieces of this puzzle together. So any help/ideas/links are greatly appreciated. And btw maybe it's better to create a separate table for each category? TIA

if I understand correctly, you want paging for the records, what I would look up is LIMIT for mysql statement and go on that, thats what u need most, also search for a tutorial about paging records on google, theres tons.

Oops, i think i didn't make myself clear enough. I've already got a pagination script that works for me so i don't want another one. 🙂
But i can't get my navigation bar to work. Maybe what i want is too much for a newbie... anyway, here is my problem.

What i want to do:

//database connection...
$result = mysql_query("SELECT category FROM table ORDER BY category");

//outer while
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
    $category = $row['category'];
    echo "$category ";

 //inner while
 while {
       // pagination script 
 }

}

But instead of "cat, dog, mice" i get "cat cat cat dog dog dog mice mice mice" 🙁

What am i doing wrong? The solution is very simple, i know... but i can't find it.

Add a DISTINCT clause in your select

$result = mysql_query("SELECT DISTINCT category FROM table ORDER BY category");
