i have a client who wants me to design a system v v similar to a photography site like istockphoto. so users buy credits and can download photos. problem is, obviously the photos have to be stored in a directory somewhere, like www.mysite.com/photos/photo1.jpg.

so how can i stop people just visiting that link, right clicking the photos and saving it? thus sharing it around with everyone and not having to pay. can i do this with php. or perhaps .htaccess??

well firstly in the CPANEL have the directory password protected would be good for a start..

Disable hotlinking that will stop users from going directly to the image

and if theres only images in the directory have a blank web page in there..

you will never make it impossible to copy a photo, its always possible, if you can see a pic you can steal it, you can only make it harder for people to steal by encrypting source code, disabling right click etc...

maybe also having a watermark on the image would be good to..

Indeed, screenshots can be taken. I am dying for a javascript function that is made avaliable that can DISABLE the print screen button. I bet it's impossible.

A javascript mouseover that changes the image as you mouseover is quite nice. Prevents some stuff from happening.

well.. i think there will also an issue for that what if the user click FILe and select Save page as??

use watermarks. that's what all the pro sites use.
