Two queries in one?

I have a table with columns timestamp and rating:

ID | timestamp | rating | etc...
1
2
3
4...

Timestamp is the time the submission was entered. Rating is the submission rating.

Now on my indexpage I would like to show the 10 newest submissions sorted by timestamp and the 10 higest rated submissions.

I know how to do it in two queries but can it be done in one? I'm trying to unload my server a little.

I think you are stuck with 2 queries. Index the fields - that might speed things up a bit.

I have never used index's before and are not quite sure how it works, but I have always thought that you could only index one column per table?

You CAN index all fields you habe in a table. You CAN also index them more than one time.

the question is is this good? which fields have to be an index, which not?

In most cases you just need an index on the fields you are searching by "WHERE", or by JOINs the "ON" condition is placed on.
