Counting 5 Minutes

Hey all does anyone know how to count 5 minutes in PHP. If anyone knows it in javascript it would also be helpfull but I would need to perform a php after the five minutes. This 5 minutes needs to be counted from when a user clicks a link. Is this possible. I have a flow diagram below to illistrate more clearly what I mean.

User Clicks Link > 5 Minute Countdown Start > Execute Script >5 Minute Countdown Finish > Execute Script

Look at the sleep function - eg:

sleep(10);

delays execution for 10 seconds

Yeah but,

1. I can't sleep for more than 30 seconds
2. The user needs to be sleeping for this to work I want it to happen in the background.

I will be adding a row to my mysql database and then after 5 minutes I will be removing this row. Any more ideas?
