what types are there?

i've set the variables in a previous page (form) and this php page executes the script

i want it to CREATE a new file with this content; not REWRITE an existing file

Are you wanting a text file?

If so, do want it formatted as comma (or other) delimited or like an ini file, or do you just want to write $contents to as it is.

What format is $content in, string, array?

You're going to have to be a bit more specific if you want help.

As a text file

$content is a string

    echo "$filename already exists";
    exit;
}
else {
      $fp = fopen($filename, 'w');
      fwrite($fp , $content);
      fclose($fp);
}
