Parsing cusotm tags

I am sure this is a easy but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

My code:

$string = "<offer>2</offer>";

I would like to be able to pull the value between my custom tag "<offer></offer>".

Basically what I am doing is pulling a template file and reading in via the template how many offers are available for that template.

I can do this in Perl very easily but I can't seem to find the equal code for PHP.

Try this

$string = "<offer>2</offer>";
$offer = ereg_replace(".*<offer>","",$string);
$offer = ereg_replace("</offer>.*","",$offer);
