float or decimal, comma problems

can you have a comma in a float or decimal field?

i just noticed when users place orders over $1000 on my shopping cart, it is inserting into the db as 1 because, i think, of the comma.

should i strip the comma before inserting it into the db? if so, how do i do it?

Absolutely strip off that comma.

$old number = '1,000';
$new_number = str_replace(',','',$old_number);
