Verify E-Mail

Why is this becoming such a goddamn fiasco.
Something so simple.

if($form_name != "" && $form_email != "") {

I've got that string.
I want to add to it something that in a very rudimentry sense verifies the correct formatting of an email address.

Someone please help.
