Protected Directory writes taken from myswl database

Hello,
I'm setting up a protected directory. I need the access writes to this to be taken from a mysql database.. Can anyone help me with this..or is there another way to do this.

why not just put the data into the mysql databse and use php to create an interface?

thought this way would be easier rather than checking if the user is logged in every time they open a page which is in the folder(if they have the direct link). Not to sure how to protect from that!!

Is it possible to use the database for the permissions??
