Regular Expression Problem

I want to remove a variable from the query string using a regular expression.

How can I remove page=2 if I have
id=1&page=2&new=3&win=4
or
id=1&page=2

page could be any number or character.

My regular expression experience is very limited and I have had mixed results.

If you can give me an answer and an explanation of how it works that would be great.

I am confused why you would want to do this.

If you're constructing the query string just don't put it there.

If you're on the page reading it don't parse php already does that for you.

I'm not parsing the string.
I wish to be able to remove &page={wahtever} from the string

I think I see what your getting at. My reg-ex experience is a bit limited as well, but let me give it a shot.

$oldURL = "id=1&page=2&new=3&win=4";
$newURL = preg_replace('/page\\=\\d+\\\&/', '', $oldURL);

That works for me, if I understand the question correctly. If there is an easier way to do this, please, someone let me know.

actually that only works if there are parameters after it this works in all cases

$oldURL = "id=1&page=2&new=3&win=4";
$newURL = preg_replace('/page\\=\\d+\\\&{0-1}/', '', $oldURL);

Thanks for the help but I may have given you some bad info.

When I said that I wish to be able to remove
&page={wahtever}
from the string I meant remove
&page=x
where x is any number,letter,or string (provided it is url encoded of course)

drawmack I ran your script and it didn't work. With this new information can you help me?

As well, I know with perl regular expressions that you need to start and end the match with a /. I don't know what the rest of your code does. Can you tell me?

there is a backslash before the S and after the equal sign.
you could also get rid of the period after the S to not match other portions of the string if "page" equals nothing.

I use ereg_replace for such things.

$str = eregi_replace("&*page=[0-9]+","",$str);

which menas:

0 or more & (i.e. there may not be a &, might be a ? if it's first in line) followed by page= followed by 1 or more numbers.

does anyone really find preg more readable than posix ereg? I sure don't.
