I visited my site today and found a nasty "under construction" message. Went to http://www.digitalrice.com/ and got the following.

ATTENTION: Digitalrice is not accepting new members and will be taking down its servers on Sept. 20th, 2003. If you are a member, please remove all your files before that date. We are taking this time to reconstruct Digitalrice. No date as to when we will accept new members. ALL accounts will be removed.

Now, english is my first language but I don't have a clue what that means.

Do I still have an account or not? Can't get to webmail, can't clear through a pop3 account, can't ftp, can't get to their forum.

Now, they talk about the 20th but it's the 21st here, but maybe they're still working so I shall try again tomorrow. Just hope Google doesn't come visiting in the meantime.

Anyone have any idea what is going on?

My interpretation is that you dont have an account anymore ("ALL accounts will be removed").

You will not be able to sign up again until they see fit ("No date as to when we will accept new members").

You should have saved your uploaded files on your comp ("remove all your files before that date").

Well, I havent touched my own digitalrice account for some time, I suppose they were deleted even before yesterday anyway.
oh well.

I had local copies so that's cool. Just got to find another host now. And I was doing well in Google too! Be interesting to see if I get slammed for duplicate content for awhile 🙂

OUCH, Sarah! That stinks. I'm sure they probably don't have an operational phone line, but you could always try giving them a call. In the meantime, I'd say you're finding a new host. And as far as Google goes, I don't think you'll get slammed... in fact I don't think you would need to resubmit your listing, unless your URL is changing. And in that case it's just an update not a re-list or duplicate list. If your URL doesn't change, Google won't know or care that you've switched hosts- they just show the URL.

PS- we've gotten burned by this in the past, too- not with digitalrice but with another host which is why I don't mind paying a little more for an established company.

My theory: the resources must be liberated from the overlords!

Get an old toaster case, stereo, Pong® game, whatever, and stick in a MOBO & RAM. Even better, go dumpster-diving in the tech areas; look for Pentium 233's that used to run Windows® 95. You'll need to buy your own HDD (that's the worst part.) Download Linux or BSD and get that toaster serving pages at home, then convince local business people that you are the absolute goddess of web programming. Show them your stuff!! Then, agree to host their site for free on your box if they let you put the box on their LAN!! They've got, well, at least a cable modem or ISDN if not something larger, right? Pretty soon, you'll be taking on RackShack! (well, that last may be an exaggeration, but you get the idea --- and, lest you think I'm kidding, I'm working on my 3rd boxen now ... this one goes in an insurance office 11 miles from here, on a T1 ... just a little more convincing required. Like, their ISP gave them this "hardware firewall" --- I run nmap against it and its open on 135,137,138,139,445, etc., etc., etc.... )

Anyhow, I think it'd be a great plan for you. 😉
