Mysql select

I have a menu:

#, a, b, c, d....

and a query

SELECT DISTINCT name FROM table WHERE name LIKE 'letter%'

I need that if a user select the # sign the msql query select all the names starting with a number...

How can I do this query ???

You might get away with

elseif ($searchterm=="#") {
   $query="select distinct n from t where name regexp "1234567890";
}

---but I've no idea off the top of my head if it'd match.

Head over to the MySQL manual and look at their options for SELECT. I expect they have a way already figured out...

SELECT DISTINCT `name` FROM `table` WHERE `name` REGEXP '[0-9]*'

matches all numbers
