I don't think there are any strong reasons against it - sounds like a good tutorial which will teach you the strong points of both architectures. ASP.NET is good for lots of things, I'm sure, although I have no experience. Obviously there's a hidden agenda - I notice the article starts rubbishing PHP by about paragraph 2 - but if you just ignore these side-swipes and concentrate on the .NET stuff, it could be good.

Here's one good thing about using Access, though: you can send someone your entire DB in one single file - save, send, you're done. You can't do that with MySQL, much as I love MySQL. Now if Access weren't so unscrupulously f**cking expensive ...

Not exactly true. I'm finishing up my backup class which backs up the entire DB to a single SQL flat file. Then just a load infile should be able to set it all up on another computer. Might not be as easy or pretty as the Access GUI, but it is much more compact 🙂

if you want a fancy gui for mysql - check here

and you can save out your mysql tables as access, excel, html, pdf, html, text, and a number of others as well

this is much more feature driven than even Access

yeah, but it's also about your needs. I don't really need all that. For the most part, I can do my administration from the command line, and pocket my 135 bucks :p

Yeah, these tools have their purpose. When I first started with MySQL, I was a phpMyAdmin junkie for about 3 months. Did everything through there...

Does no one use mysqldump?

$mysqldump mydb > /home/me/mydb.sql

Restoring is simple as sticking the db name in the file and doing:

$mysql < /home/me/mydb.sql

And, I hate to disagree with Norman, but that's one (1) file you can send to anybody....

As to the OP's question; I can't think of a good reason that I'd switch my operations to ASP, but I wouldn't mind to learn about it...and prolly pretty quick.

I'm going for a prelim conversation with a business next week whose site is all in ASP/Java and cough frames. I have no idea what I'm gonna tell 'em they need to do...I have a feeling they want me to revamp what's there instead of rewriting everything (and, probably, moving the server...)

I think the problem with being a "one man show" is the fact that there's a million guys out there developing new toys, um, technology every day, and no way you can know it all. If it were a conference, and the company's paying, I'd say "go for it."

For reading a doc, if you got nothing better to do at bedtime ...

C'mon Dale - as the Bunkermaster said, you were just waiting for an opportunity to disagree with me :-).

I guess what I meant was ... you can send a single file with a nice little icon and Windoze victims who don't know diddly squat about SQL can just click on the file and open it in Access. This is quite good when dealing with the kind of people I have to deal with. "Just click on it - honestly - don't worry, yes I know it's a real live database, but you don't have to know thrupence ha'penny about anything to use it."

he may have a point, but you can do it with the tool i showed also, and it is much better than access for previous features mentioned before

I'd say that is what you meant. And you get a point for being able to explain what your meant.

Like a true geek, I literalize everything. Like, I emailed my brother "will you be home for Thanksgiving" and he sez "I'll be at someone's home, just don't know if it'll be Mom/Dad's 😃 "

As for the pointy click open an app thing, I completely understand, having just gotten off the phone from a 20 minute call helping a guy 30 miles away reset his wireless keyb/mouse after switching batteries. I now know why Dell charges for phone support... :rolleyes:

Actually, that article is very good.

True, they use some out of date practices (session_register for one) and there is the concern of our apparent "lack of error trapping", but apart from that you can see the article is pretty fair. Most of the errors can be chalked up to a lack of indepth searching - and the same could probably be said about an article of migration from ASP.NET to PHP.

Yes, it was written by a Microsoft floozie and put on the MSDN website. But even with all that it's still just a comparison between the pros/cons of the two, with an underlying mantra of "Come to ASP. You know you want to..."

Right tool for the right job. Always.
