mail form updating databse

Hi

i would like to have a contact form that also updates a database at the same time as mailing the form.

Any ideas on how to do this. At the moment all I can do is send the mail not update the databse. can I assign more than one action to the submit button?
Can I use hidden fields to send the data.

I am not after the code on how to do it just a few helpful pointers.

yes...you can have multiple functions in one page...

what i like to do is code each part into a function
