if you were trying to build a streaming server, something that people would download and install, php probably would NOT be the best solution, huh?

what i mean is....

i had an idea for a streaming server that people would download and install. it would also update the main site with information such as ip address, "what's playing", think shoutcast, right?

but is this something i could build in php? or should i just consider another language?
