gzip encoded pages display garbage on first load?!

I am using the ob_gzhandler to gzip / compress my pages before I send them to the browser. My problem is, the first couple times the page loads, it displays a full page of garbage. If I hit refresh on the browser, it works fine, and any other pages within that site work fine for as long as I am there. If I close my browser, open it again, and reload the page, it displays garbage again.

I am not sure why this is happening, and wondered if anyone else ever had the same problem.

apache / linux

browsing on windows xp, IE 6.01

maybe some error in IE - i guess it does not understand the data r encoded so it outputs them just as they r... i think there will be some information on the net, do a google (groups) search, since there r many problems with ie not recognizing mime types etc.

anyone else have any insight on this? I saw some people who posted about this on the phpBuilder tutorial about gzip encoding, but no helpful solutions.

maybe this class can help u http://leknor.com/code/php/view/class.gzip_encode.php.txt - i did not test it and don't know how to use it, but it seems to help some people so check that out....

ok, so maybe have a look at http://www.php.net/ob_gzhandler - the newest user contributed note offers some information on how to use the gzip encoding and how to handle different browsers so check this out maybe the class is buggy?!?
