Functions?

im just starting php and i was wondering if someone could explain to me functions

Well, here is a little example..

// define our function
function multiply($number_one, $number_two)
{
     // multiply the given numbers with each other
     $number = ( $number_one * $number_two );
     return $number;
}

// test it!
echo multiply(5, 10)."<br/>\n";
echo multiply(2, 4);

This function expects two parameters (user inputs, in this case $number_one and $number_two) but you don't have to have any parameters if you don't need it.

Functions are most often used so you don't have to do the same routine over and over again.

a function is a means of encapulating code in a reusable fashion.

What this means is if I would type the same code more then once and that code is more then one line I can put it into a function and reduce the retyping to a single line.

This has many benefits some of which are:

I only have to test and debug one piece of code
I can change the function and it changes globally
I can use that code on other projects in the future.

You are kidding, right? Because:

Those very very clear and simple explanations.
If you need more in depth information you would go to the PHP manual on [man]functions[/man], which you would know because you read the guidelines. Right?

Sorry, don't mean to sound like an ass, but when you come in asking a vague question like "please explain functions", and people do just that, the very LEAST you can do is say "thanks for that information." Instead, you just asked for a website that explains it better. You may have just as well said "I have no time for your stupid explanations. Just point me to someone that knows what they're talking about."

The people on this board are in most cases very friendly, and very giving. They don't flame much, they are extremely patient, and quite helpful. They deserve just a bit more respect than this.

don't feel bad Merve I had to dig out my intro to programming book and look up the definition of a function. It's kind of like defining go.
