Support tools for php and mysql

Hi all

Im currently about to start a university project called STUMP (support tools for mysql and php). One of the requirements of this project is to attempt to remove the need to type repetitive code over and over again for things such as connecting to mysql databases and searching.

I was hoping some of you out there might have some suggestions of such repetitive code that you personally find irritating, or perhaps can think of other tools that you would find helpful in a text editor solely designed to write php

Write a database extraction layer. Functions to connect to the database, a function to parse the results, a function to insert/delete/update, and a function to close the connection. This helped me clear a lot of time in my coding since I'm always connecting to some database.

Not only does it do database abstraction but it also lets you create portable db apps.

Depends...
Everything I found for abstraction layers only has support for Oracle 8.1+. Completely different function set for pre 8.1. So in this case, I had to write my own. But if all you're connecting to is MySQL or Postgres, there's tons of those layers already written. But then again, experience comes with writting the code....
