detect results of downloaded file

I have a link for a user to download a file. When the download box comes up, the user can either download (or open) or Cancel. Is there any way to detect if the download happened or was cancelled?

(I can tell if the download box appeared -- I just can't tell if the download really happened or not.)

Im not too sure about this.. The only possible way that comes to mind is detect it using javascript. But im not positive that would work. I know PHP cannot do it.

why do you say that? i dont see why hacking is required.
