../ not working

Hello

I am not sure if ../ is not working or if I am just using it wrong. Basically i have a folder called images, right off of htdocs. What i am trying to do is display an images by just typing ../images/bird.gif, not the whole path (in case it changes latter), but none of my images show up and when i click on properties it shows the path for the images as

http://localhost/websites/test/images/bird.gif

what i want the path to look like is

http://localhost/images/bird.gif

The file that I am working on is in the test folder. Do I just have to add more dots to the ../ or am i just totally doing this wrong.

Well i tried adding ../ multiple times and it seems to be working. So if the webpage is in http://localhost/websites/test i put
../../images/bird.gif

Is this what iam suppose to do? Or is there some other way

../ means to go back in folders. What you want is /, which means document root. So you should use /images/bird.gif
