how do i run php as a cgi?

so yeah,. ive been using php on my hosting account for ages, running as an apache module, but how do i do it as cgi? i tried making a simple script, naming it test.cgi and putting it in teh cgi-bin and running it, but i got an error. how is it done?

in your httpd.conf file

should be CGI/FastCGI

ah, so since im on a crappy shared server with no access to my httpd.conf file, i cant do it no?
