I've stumbled upon a problem I thought I had solved a long time ago, loggin in users and keeping them logged in if they wanted to. My method, if they wanted to be logged in, was to set a cookie remembering their username and password, if they do not want to be rememberd, then I would not set the cookie. NOW I hear that using cookies aren't good at all.

What is the best and most professional (meaning used by the best coders out there) way of logging in users, and keeping them logged in if they wanted?
