MS Drops Standalone IE

Micro$oft will no longer be making Internet Explorer standalone. Meaning, you cannot download IE 7 (next IE version) on your computer. You have to buy the new MS operating system to get it. I think that's a BAD move on Micro$ofts part because they are limiting their marketing range. On the other hand it's GREAT on everyone else’s behalf. MS will loose their foothold on making webpages "IE" compatible because most ppl use IE. Now I think most ppl will be switching browsers after a while (I'm going to Firebird). I know it's old news but does anyone have a comment?? Like good riddance. LOL

I say gj M$, you just screwed yourself over. By the time the Windows version after Lognhorn comes out, the world will be on Linux (OR FreeBSD, just to make dalecosp happy 😃).

Yes, hopefully eveyone will switch to a real browser (such as Firebird). Something that is standards compliant and doesn't have their own agenda/methodology that they are more concerned about than the W3C's and the rest of the world's...

just thinkin about this and i realized Firebird's "unzip and go" idea will probably turn off users who dont like loking in the Program Files folder........ so most will use full Mozilla if they're gonna go that route.

This has been olds (rather than news, geddit 😃 ) for ages. Still probably won't stop me from using IE to test stuff cos I don't think that it will encourage people to go out and buy longhorn.

M$ did something dumb...what else can I say? But gamers are still going to have to use Windows (I'm not a gamer), and so will end up using IE as their browser. Maybe, because of M$'s stupidity, newer games will be made Linux-compatible, and so lots of desktop users will migrate to Linux, and discover the wonders of Mozilla. But until game manufacturers make games Linux-compatible, Linux won't be able to crack the desktop monopoly that M$ currently holds. Damn M$!

It seems to me to be one of two things: a ploy to keep selling new OSes...or else the folks in Redmond got tired of paying more and more for their 'Net connection as more and more people use Windowsupdate to download more and more patches to cover more and more problems in the Explorer codebase.

Which do you suppose is more (?and more?) likely?

I'm sure that somebody else has some other ideas, too....

I'd say it's more likely that before too long Microsoft will say "No, we don't support your operating system any more. Buy a new one."

M$ owns a market. They can screw around with it a lot...until people turn to Linux. This is just for the sake of making money.
