I'm looking for a good article on advanced sql

I've been managing to get what I want out of mysql with simple but I know SQL also supports functions such as JOIN and LEFT JOIN but the documentation at mysql.com is very unclear to me.

Can anyone point me to an article which describes the usefulness of some of mysql's functions? If not, then could someone at least explain the JOIN's to me?
