Best sound card choice

Hi everybody...

I want to buy a new sound card, and I want to guarantee that this sound card comes with Linux RH 9.1 driver.

So what choices do I got?

Unfortunitly, I couldn't find my build-in sound card which is C-Media (CMI9739) in those list of sound cards, that's why I want to buy new one since my current one are not recongnized by my Linux 9.1.

I got the driver for C-Media from some place, I read the configuration instructions, but I couldn't understand any thing!!

In the instruction there was:
- Turn on sound support (soundcore module).
- Complied source code.
I don't know how to do both! there was no descriptions for any!!!!

By the way, I am still very new in Linux.

So do you advice me to keep on trying configure my current C-Media or buy a new sound card??

Did you check the redhat site?
I know it sounds silly, but they have a lot of great resources.

Also, you should probably buy a book like "Radhat Bible" which explains all about ./configure, make and make install which are your best friends in linux.

Hi, I bought a new sound card AT LAST!!!

First, my Linux detect it and it could only output .wav files.

Any time I tried to play .mp3 files, I get an error, until I discovered that I have to install the support files for MP3 (to XMMS player) from the site http://xmms.org/

Now I can execute both .wav and .mp3, but I can't listen to any of my audio CDs 🙂

Hrm. Been so long since I have been on RH, (I'm a SuSE person :p) I can't remember what groups they have. Make sure you have added yourself to the CD or music group.

A little late, but....

You turn on soundcore (Sound) support when reconfiguring/recompiling your kernel. As far as compiling the driver, there should be instructions in whatever tarball you downloaded.

Check the redhat manual regarding how to do this. (kernel recompile)
