Editable select box

I have a select box and the options are pulled in from a MySQL database using PHP. My users would like to either use the drop down or just type in the data. I cant seem to figure out how to make the select box editable. Does anybody have any suggestions

Can't edit a select box. May need a text box instead. Or a text box with some javascript to add the inputted text to the select box.
