chmod folder

hello there is it possible for me to change the properties of the folder inside my script?

like sample if the folder is on for reading and not allowing user to write and i want my script to change the properties so that i can write a text file from that folder and clos it again after writing.

is this possible? and in case what should i do?

This works with files why not to folders:

system("chmod 755 $var");

Try exec() or shell_exec() to run the chmod. Unless you're on Windoze...
