Meta tags-no php experience

Hello all,

I have to edit the meta tags on a php designed site. Can I (using an ftp program) just edit the meta tags and save as php without breaking the php code.

Example: Edit meta tags on index.php
Save the page in ftp program as index.php

Would appreciate an answer. I'm on a deadline.
