Not a rant really but...does anyone remeber when they very first got into programming?

I remember I was in 7th grade and I wanted to make a game as a project for my aviation class. I had no idea how such things worked (but I was still much more tech savvy than anyone I knew). I remember I asked my math teacher (who happened to teach QBasic also) what I should use to make a small airplane game. So I got home and started on making this game with QBasic. Everything went fairly well until I got to the part where I was going to make graphics. I made a plane graphic (by using a color grid, different number for each pixel). It was then I realized that QBasic sucks.

I remember those days... it was back when after reading the first page of a book.... you already knew more than your teacher... but hell for the first.... ~3-4 years of programming... I never had anyone to ask questions... no internet... no programming savvy people at school... just books, testing, and DEBUGGING to learn from...

one of those truely "self taught" people 😃

Why, because tekky, people want you to answer their questions on demand. Why search when you can just get someone to answer you directly. It takes so much less effort for them.

my first program was a war dialer. I was in sixth grade and five of us got our hands on a unix server and some dumbterminals when the school upgraded their equipment.

My second program was a driver for the scan tron reader at school, did I mention that I was an honor role student?

New rant: anti-JavaScript newbies

There are newbies who say that they want to do something in PHP that can be more easily done in JavaScript. They even post JavaScript code that they want to turn into PHP. It makes me mad.

There are anti-JavaScript newbies cuz you can turn JS off...and you can't turn PHP off...

And any control you give to the client is more control you take away from your scripts...

the problem with JS is that I DO NOT CONTROL THE CLIENT it's that simple. Different browsers use different versions and all kinds of stuff. If I can keep it server side I do.

Ah, but then the fun starts when the Javascript in question pops up a window and writes stuff into it.

... i have to disagree :rolleyes:

JavaScript is the other side of PHP.

It's designed not to give you the control over client operation, (any language that do it on client side, isn't a language, is a trojan...) but for interact with him.

And so i find REALLY useless disable the JavaScript on your pc...

But it does allow you to program trojans. If they took out all the functionality that can be abused they would take out all the funcitonality.

I DIDN'T say it wasn't useless, but people do it to circumvent everyones javascript error checking, form validation, etc...

Good luck turning off PHP 😃

This is the point. I'm saing
"You disable JavaScript ? I can't validate your form and if there is any error you'll get at the next page. If you don't want three pages loaded for a missing '@' let be JavaScript enabled. Else you pay for three pages load time."

And i do the same test on var in php too, JS or not JS.

(an example from phpbuilder: go at your pm page, don't check any msg and click "delete"... it load a page to tells you "you don't have checked nothing". Then you go back at pm page. Three page Vs a simple javascript (enabled or not).)

And so if people want "turn off" PHP, just don't load the page with ".php" extension. (myself, some time, when i look .asp press stop.)

/me wear red/blue stretch tights and fly to save JS 😃

Ops, i'm a bit OT...

I want rant for the guys who post for regexp and don't wan't find it self the right solution !!! 🆒
