Convert long url to short url

I am trying to convert a long url to a short URL. I have searched on the web and found few sites who offers this service, but they use database. I want to convert the URL without using database.

Here is with example what I am trying to do:

LONG URL:

http://www.phpbuilder.com/board/newreply.php?action=newreply&threadid=10256957&

CONVERT TO SHORT URL:

http://www.mysite.com/phpbuilder

try preg_match , or/and extract the domain name from the url and concatenate it to your url.

Why can't you just control that in the name?
Like <a href="a/really/long/tedious/screwy/looking/url.php">Short URL</a>

You don't need a database, though it helps for storage. As long as it never changes, you can hard code it. Or, for dynamic, you could use a flat file...

What are you trying?

http://www.phpbuilder.com/board/newreply.php?action=newreply&threadid=10256957&

is (thx to the GET variables) one of billions of possible URLs, while

http://www.mysite.com/phpbuilder

is just a single URL.

How do you intend to map the latter to the former?

Having said that, try an .htaccess file with a redirect or a rewrite!
