Rename uploaded images

Hi all,
I currently have a directory (cover_images) on my local server which contains several images. The image files look like:

354678.gif
4534545.gif
4654346.gif etc.

What i want to do is rename them to look like:

354678_cover_small.gif
4534545_cover_small.gif
4654346_cover_small.gif etc.

Any ideas on the best way to do this?

if you want to upload files through a form and store them as a different name, that should be easy enough to figure out. if the files are already on the server: http://www.php.net/rename
