number of open connections?

Hi,

Does anyone know how many open connections there can be on a site using php/mysql, hosted on my own pc, with a 512k dsl connection without the site slowing down?

depends on the speed of your system, the number of concurent database connections you allow, what else you're running, how much ram you have and a bunch of other stuff.

just a rough estimate of the minimum.....

running pentium III, 700mhz, 384mb ram, just running windows xp and apache 1.3.28

we can't give you one there are too many variables. This is why it's generally considered a bad idea to use your main system as a web server.

You'll need to run load tests.

You need to look at it more like this. Say each page on your site is 50k and your dsl line can serve 512 download and 256 upload. So you need to look at it in terms of download and upload speeds because a pIII has more then enough power to serve a DSL line.

If you do something like 5 times 50k (5 pages / sec at 50k in size) you are looking at about 250k/s upload. Your DSL connection can serve five 50k pages a second.

If you do something like (60 seconds 60 minutes 24 hours) = 86400 seconds. Now if your server can serve fine pages a second you are looking at 432,000 pages / day.

You need to look at the total footprint of your pages though say that you have 50k in images per page now you are down to 2 pages / sec.

Thats a good way of way of explaining it.

If i was to require more bandwidth, apart from increasing my connection speed, how else could i get that?

I.e. Would it be possible to run another server on another dsl line and connect that to the same localhost as the first server?

Don't know if that makes any sense?

Yes you can have two DSL connection but a better solution would be to have it hosted on an ISP's servers for a price. For about $10/month you have have a hosting provider host your website.

Check out Canada Hosting: Linux Web Site Page Hosting

They are a local hosting provider and would probably want to have something local to your city as they are local to mine.

But they will provide you with php/mysql and about 25 mb of storage on their server. They have large internet connections to the internet that can server 100+ pages a second to the internet for a small price. This is your best bet as an extra DSL connection will cost more than having a hosted solution.

Plus it will be more reliable than hosting it on your own computer. They have people that monitor your sites and make sure that are always on.
