Parsing Control Chars for valid XML

I am using PHP for XML streaming, and it works great except I that I don't know how to replace certain charecters. htmlspecialchars() works great for making valid XML of quotes, brackets, etc... but I lack a way to parse Control Chars like ^H (aka control-h or backspace). I'm not even sure how to represent these chars in PHP.

Any help would be greatly appriciated. This looks like a great place for me to lurk and help others as well.

You'd use the ASCII codes (in PHP you've got [man]chr[/man], see also the chapter on the string type), in XML you'd use the numeric character entity, e.g. .
