Size of array in bytes

Quick question, is there a method for returning the size of an array in bytes?

Example:

echo sizeinbytes($fso);

returns: 24576 bytes

I wouldn't think so... it would depend whats contained in the array and get really messy. For instance, what if one of the array values is an object? Or another array? Or a reference to the initial array?

If its just characters though, then couldn't you just sum the number of characters in each element of the array? 1 byte per character...? Assuming ASCII of course...

In the case of pointing to objects or itself, it is not really taking up space for those references. If the entire object is in it that could be serialized. Basicaly I was looking for an already existing php fuction that asks ' how much memory is this item taking up ' rather than a per item grind.

Counting the chars on each element and each tree below that is not what I am looking for but yes, on a small array I suppose that would be viable.
