string extraction

ok, say i want to pull out some italic text contained in:

testing 123, testing

i guess i want to use preg_match? how do i go about setting it up?

lol, wildcards? not sure. this is for a multi extraction, meaning there will be more than one match, and i need to store all the results.

I think you would do this:

preg_match_all("/^<i>+.+</i>/s", $var_to_match, $output_array);
?>

Actually you want to use

preg_replace()

$string = "<i>HHSHSH</i>";
$val = preg_replace("/<i>(.*?)<\/i>/", "\$1", $string);

ok, i also came up with this:

preg_match_all("/.*?<\/i>/", $string, $output_array);

but, it includes the italics, how can i exclude them? thanks

Put a ()'s around what you want to save.. like below

code=php[/code]

Now in the replace call whats between the ()'s by using \$1

I showed you this..

great thanks, now one more question. i've been trying to figure this out for the past few hours, and no matter what i do, it doesnt work.

$string = "size=2>52</FONT></TD>"

preg_match_all("/>([0-9]*)</", $string, $bla);

now, doesnt this mean extract A number of any length between > and < ? well thats what i need to do, i tried all sorts of things. arghhh.
