Well, I'm a condescending ass, so I'm going to have to vote 'never'.

Realistically though... there's always going to be someone who knows more about any specific subject than you. (You meaning anyone reading this post, not you, Chancer)

Though, I'm probably the wrong person to answer this poll, because I'm pretty much a n3wb myself.

One possibility for some sort of 'line' between newbie/non-newbie....... when you are helping yourself and others more than you are (need to) asking for help.

The never was my thought also, as you will always find something new about something..... I mean - take English for example - as my first language - I am still learning words...

I agree with goldbug, any guy is always a newbie about any subject, but "never" is a bit too... (i'm an optimist, my glass is half-full 🙂 ).

And i think always wrong to answer with a time: a day you are noob, the day after not?

I think you are not a noob when you can think your project and you know what you can do and what not.

I think it depends on what you are talking about. Being a n00b to the forums, or to PHP.

I think for the first case, you are a n00b until no one her can answer your questions (too advanced or something...whatever).

As for being a n00b to PHP, I think that when you have become reasonable familiar with a working knowledge of common functions [edit] and the ability to put functions you don't know into use without asking for help.

Since the poll didnt specify the subject matter, I say never, since everyone is, or will be, a newbie is some subject or another.

I dont ask questions, that doesnt mean im incompetent at things in PHP and Programming concepts in that matter. I would still say im nOOb material.

Hmm. Laserlight has a good point about subject matter. I could agree, perhaps, on that. Learning never stops.

However, if we're talking about the profession/hobby that's most often represented here, I can't say "never". I can almost say never. I'm sure that never is true in my case, but...

There are a few phenomenally interesting gentlegeeks who come 'round here occasionally and discuss subjects like exponential calculus while reminiscing about the first FORTRAN compilers coming out when they got their first jobs, or some such; they know history, programming, and have a wide range of experience.

It's even evident in their code (at times) that they have logged lots of seat time in many different environments. And, to tell truth, some of them probably aren't so old.

I'm not one of these guys .... I enjoy their company greatly in the forums, learn from them, envy them their talent, and talk to them as if they were my friends. It'd be nice to think that if we ever met, we could be, a little. (However it's not too likely to happen with most of them.)

But there's a critical difference, and way in which they are not like me at all. I'm noobie, and they're not; even though they'd be the first to give something akin to an "aw shucks" (in geek terms, of course) in response to a statement like that.

Now, lest you think I'm only talking about one fellow or two with very high post counts, that's not necessarily true. There are others whose postings share these qualities, but post much less often. Probably they have learned that they have only so much time, and have discplined themselves to not spend too much time here. Or, perhaps they spread their unique knowledge and point of view on some other forum more often --- I am sure that group of folks is fortunate to hear from them.

So, the best answer might be "not never, but it usually takes a loooooong time..."

Don't kid me. You see it once in a great while, admist all the frittering that goes on around here. You can tell the voices of experience. Or at least, I can.

Hrmmm.....dale makes a good point though. I think that it may all be in the eye of the beholder. I was going over some of Weedpacket's code the other day, and sitting here going "how did he come up with that??". Now in my mind, Weedpacket's not a n00b. In his mind, maybe he is.

But then every time I see stolzy's code, I always think "What a friggin n00b. That's just ugly code". j/k 😃

No, I'm not trying to start a religious war. It's just the one I've read the most of.
